iOS App Development: Publishing, Access and Handover

Before you build the first screen, decide who controls the publishing account and how users will get the app. iOS app development for a business also covers testing, preparation for Apple's review and the handover of access after development, so put those decisions in the project scope. Compare proposals by post-development responsibilities too: you need to be able to publish a fix, change contractors and keep control of your data.

Who is the app for, and how will people get it?

An app that customers find on their own and an app for a defined group of employees have different needs. Write down the audience before deciding on distribution: who may install the app, who may sign in and who can see which data.

Apple distinguishes public, private and unlisted distribution. Private distribution is intended for specific organizations through Apple Business or Apple School Manager. An unlisted app is available via a direct link and does not appear in regular App Store search results.

Business situationWhat to clarify before development
New customers should find the appPublic availability, markets, store listing content and user support.
A specific organization uses the appA suitable private distribution method, and who manages devices and users.
Installation is shared via a direct linkWhether unlisted distribution fits the purpose and how data access is controlled separately.
The app is still in testingThe scope of beta testing and the conditions for moving to the production version.

An install link is not a substitute for sign-in and user permissions. If the app shows work orders, documents or customer data, plan access checks as a separate part of the functionality.

Do not leave distribution until the end. Apple's rules for switching between public and private distribution after approval require a new app record and a new submission. Verify the chosen path before it becomes the basis of the contract and the user instructions.

In whose name should the publishing account be opened?

For an organization commissioning a public app, Apple recommends that the organization enrol in the Developer Program and invite the external contractor to its team. With an organization account, the legal entity's name is shown as the seller. For individuals and certain sole-trader arrangements, Apple applies different rules for the displayed name.

Before opening an account, check which enrolment type applies to your business. Do not assume the brand name will automatically become the seller name.

Prepare a short responsibility record for the project:

  • A person inside the company manages the main account and access recovery.
  • The contractor receives their own invitation to the team and the permissions needed for the agreed work.
  • It is clear who tracks membership, contracts and account-related notices.
  • It is known who may submit a version for review and who approves the release.
  • Access is reviewed when an employee changes role or a collaboration ends.

This is project-management advice. Align the exact split of tasks with the chosen distribution method and Apple's rules at the time you act. One employee's password shared across the whole project team makes it hard to check later who had access.

What should testing on iPhone and iPad prove?

A demonstration on the contractor's device is not a sufficient acceptance criterion. Agree which devices and OS versions you support and which actions a business user must be able to complete.

TestFlight distributes beta builds and gathers feedback. A beta build is available for testing for up to 90 days. External testers may require review, including the first build added to a group. Plan TestFlight for testing, with a separate agreement on production distribution.

Test the whole task

If an employee submits a field record through the app, the test starts at sign-in and ends with confirmation that the record reached the business system. Adding a photo or opening the home screen checks only part of that task.

Build acceptance criteria around situations you will actually meet:

  1. The user signs in for the first time, recovers access or changes device.
  2. The connection drops during submission and the user checks whether the record was saved.
  3. The app lacks camera or notification permission and the user needs understandable guidance.
  4. A person uses larger text or a screen reader and must complete the main action.
  5. Two user roles see different data and allowed actions.

Include offline operation only if it is needed and agreed. Describe specifically what is stored locally, when data is sent and how conflicting changes are resolved.

What to prepare for App Review?

Apple's review is a separate step after the internal project checks. Apple asks for information about the app's purpose and audience, access details for demo accounts and any required documentation. What applies depends on the app's features and the market it serves.

Decide in the project who prepares the description, screenshots, support contact and data-processing information. If the app uses an external system, prepare a demonstration path that does not expose real customer data. Also check that the demo account remains available during the review.

Track the development completion date and the public launch date separately. Apple's review-status guidance also describes cases that need additional verification. Leave room in the plan for answers, fixes and resubmission; do not tie a campaign to an assumed automatic approval.

What must app handover include?

Handing over an install link does not solve future maintenance. Before signing the proposal, agree the usage rights and the handover of what the next team needs to continue the work.

Ask for a delivery list you can verify:

DeliverableCheck at handover
Source code and project historyAn authorized person has access to the agreed repository.
Build and release instructionsThe procedure is documented and verified in the agreed environment.
List of third-party services and licencesFor each one, the account owner, purpose and payment method are known.
Backend and dataThe agreed access, documentation and export procedure are available.
Open items and maintenanceKnown issues, obligations and the way to report problems are recorded.

State explicitly what maintenance covers: fixes, adjustments for new OS versions and existing integrations, or user support. New features can be a separate piece of work. Without that boundary it is hard to compare two monthly fees.

If you are still deciding between iOS only or both mobile platforms, start with the mobile app development guide for businesses. For a concrete project, connect the scope of mobile app development with your audience, devices and the systems you already use.

To get an estimate for iOS app development, prepare the main user task, the distribution method and the status of your existing accounts. Send Novero a description of the app and those decisions so the conversation can cover development, publishing and what happens after handover.
